in my earlier racing years I had a bit of a reputation as the party boy, especially at post race events. I have calmed down a lot as I have got older and tend to hang out primarily with my good friends. Here is a big portion of my support crew in Kona for 2009. We had a great night

tim Marr has become a great mate and is a top 10 finisher in kona for sure in the next couple of years. A great easy going guy, who shares a very similar personality to myself, we get on really well. He was a big help this year in Kona and ironically I raced in his race number this year. He finished 15 the year prior which was my start number this year.

Ok I did not win the race and that was a little disappointing. But to be honest, I have never been happier with a perfromance. At one satge in the race I went from going to win this event comfortably, to wondering how I was going to survive these killer cramps. To fight back, and claw a 4th place finish with all that going on. The face says it all.

With my girls now at school, and a sport that is conducted primarily in the Northern Hemisphere, time away for racing is always tough. This year I was away from my family a lot preparing and racing events. In years prior it was so easy as thhe kids would travel with us, but stability for them is something that Emma and I really believe in. Life on the road with your kids is good for us, but not the best for them. They were my motivation this year and every race I do I have a picture of my two girls on my handlebars to remind me of the sacrifices we have all made. Looking at them makes me smile when I race.

I always like too try and enjoy every race I do. I was very comfortable on the bike this year in Kona and just wished I was in the front bunch after a terrible swim. Here I am aboout to catchh the front group with the press around. We all had a little laugh.

My 4th top 5 performance in Kona. I have grown up in this race and continue to grow with each performance. I am counting down the days again until 2010 race. Mark my words, it will be epic.

That was a day of Roller Coaster emotions. Not my second World Title in Kona but definately one of my best warrior performances.

I have never been prouder of a performance in my life. Not the result I was after, but everyone who raced me today, knows I have many huge fights left in me. Bring on 2010.

At mile 12 my race was about surviving these cramps. I lost 6 minutes in 2 miles as I had to walk and went from winning this race to wondering how I would finish it. Rasmus Henning caught me towards the energy lab and I had gone back to 7th place in the race. I had walked, vomitted and shuffled for 4 miles but was now back in the hunt. With 9 miles left to run I went back on the chase.

The downhill run towards Lu Lu's was where the first big cramp hit me hard. My conncerns started to grow here. I was 5 minutes down on the race lead and still 3 minutes ahead of the pack at 8 miles. This cramp really pulled me up on this downhill. I took a mental note, dont stride out on the downhills and stay controlled. More salt, more salt more salt.

Out of the tent I pushed 6 minute miles along Alii Drive. My mind was good and I was feeling in control and running towards my second title. I was fighting off cramps but getting my salts in. At this point I was thinking this race is mine. Fat chance anyone is going to catch me.

After the worst swim in my life in Kona, I moved through on the bike and jumped off 7 minutes dwon on Chris lieto and 3 minutes up on the chase group. Perfect posiiton. I was with Norman Stadler and tried to motivate him to push with me on the run. I could see in his eyes that his fight for the day was over.

On the Queen K I really opened up on the bike. I rode a great day and ripped through the field with the 2nd fastest bike split of the day. I was feeling incredible, but had a few cramps creeping up coming into town.

My bike in 2009 was a real weapon all year. It was my trump card I thought for the title in 2009. Unfortunately I swam too bad and was on the chase from the beginning.

My bad swim this year cost me big time. Here I am with the second group going up Palani Hill. It was a terrible day in the water but the start of a great day on the bike.

I was so organised this year myself and Terenzo where the first to check our bikes this year.

Sitting at the house in Kona with my closest friends and family. The night before any Ironman is a little hectic. Making sure I have everything ready for the morning.

Riding Latigo with Ronnie on a super hot day in LA 3 weeks prior to Kona this year

Training up through Latigo Canyon with the Suisse Boys prior to Kona this year. Great fun with these boys and incredibly hot weather to work out in. I think this ride was 110 degrees (43 celcius). It was super hot

I flew up my key massage therapist Dave Cavaco from Australia to join me in LA for 2 weeks. I was having a few issues with my shins after camp and needed some serious deep tissue work. Dave has the best hands in the business and jumped on the plane. He came to the Malibu Triathlon and was able to meet Jeremy Piven one of his favourite actors. He had a great time in LA and did wonders with my legs.
